To position a partial bundle of shingles that otherwise might slide away on a slightly steep deck, you can temporarily insert a piece of step flashing under one of the shingle tabs of the straight-pattern run just installed. Lift a tab and gently slide one edge of two or three L-shaped pieces of step flashing snug against the nail holding the shingle in place. 

The idea is to create a temporary resting place for the loose shingles that are about to be installed. Again, the shingles must be within reach bu they must not prevent you from lifting the shingle tabs as you install the current run of the straight pattern. When you are finished with the run, be careful not to damage the shingle tab as you remove the step flashing.
